The Street

On Now:

March 2 – April 4, 2008
Opening Reception Sunday, March 2, 4 – 8 pm

The street is a purposeful public space designed for transit and commerce but also, by default and in lieu of piazzas or a public square, it is our primary public space.
It is a thoroughfare shared by trucks, cars, bikes, streetcars, baby strollers, construction workers, parades, utilities workers, sales people, shoppers, demonstrators, canvassers, the homeless, flaneurs and pedestrians of all ages and ranges of mobility.
We are not all there at the same time – we are unaware of many events or usages.
Encounters are transitory. We often avoid eye contact with those who share the pavement.
Who is making decisions about the look and life of the street? Will we be smeared entirely in stucco as far as the eye can see? Can we understand our city and its residents through our encounters on the streets?
Do we see who is really there, what is really going on?
Sixteen local artists working in multiple media consider the street in our group exhibition.
…we love first when we see them painted
Things we have passed perhaps a hundred times, nor cared to see.
Robert Browning, Fra Lippo Lippi
