Body of Water

Toronto-born sculptor David Mah was featured in a solo exhibition at Side Space Gallery opening April 1, 2007. The exhibition featured large sculptural figures of men or mythical creatures, created in wax and cast in bronze, fiberglass or cement fondue. His figures attempt to defy the mass that constrains them, in a liberation of character. A series of vivid pencil sketches gave us another take on the individual men David portrays with resonant, non-rational imagery. He works in seclusion, and his pieces convey a sense of the outsider; yet he expresses something that draws people into his work.

The reclusive artist studied art at Central Tech, then worked as a butcher for twenty years before taking up sculpture fulltime. David’s last show was at 80 Spadina, 15 years ago during ArtsWeek.

Over the past four years local St. Clair residents have been fortunate in catching occasional and intermittent glimpses of David’s sculptures, one at a time, in the window of Caffe 163 or Sam’s Hardware. From April 1 – 28 we had a unique opportunity to see a comprehensive presentation of David Mah’s outstanding body of work.
